Homeless Care

In early July HUD's (US Department of Housing and Urban Development) Secretary, Steve Preston, said that faith-based organizations are making a big difference in the President's efforts to reduce homelessness. Mr. Preston addressed the White House National Faith-Based and Community Initiatives Conference highlighting the Bush Administration's partnership with faith-based and community organizations and steps being taken to reduce chronic homelessness, especially among America's veterans.

"The Faith-based and Community Intitiative combines the strengths of the public and private sectors to make our social programs work better," the Secretary said. "There is a vast, network of partnerships between HUD, local communities and nonprofit organizations around the country. These partnerships are incredibly effective in helping to reduce the number of persons who are calling the streets their home."

In 2002 Bush stated that ending chronic homelessness was going to be made a national priority. Between 2005 and 2006 communities around the country reported an approximate 12 percent decrease in the number of chronically homeless individuals, about 20,000 fewer homeless individuals living on the streets or in emergency shelters. The decline in homeless persons is a direct result of HUD and local "continuums of care" that have invested their time into this cause and are devoted to creating more permanent supportive housing units.

"We are part of a new way of making a difference. Our work on homelessness would not be as comprehensive or successful without partnership with faith-based groups," Preston stated.
