Lending Discrimination

On Monday, May 19, 2008, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development made a Public Service Announcement (PSA) that announced their "One Call. Many Answers" campaign that plans to educate the public, minorities in particular, about their rights and privileges regarding the provisions of the Federal Fair Housing Act. Not only does this campaign target mainly African Americans and Hispanics, it will also be presented bilingually in English and Spanish.

This campaign's major pull point is Dennis Haysbert. Does the name look familiar? That's because he's an actor, best known for the character of President Palmer in the Emmy-award winning television series 24. The PSA shows Haysbert, sketching his dream home on a napkin and talking about how it is illegal to discriminate in lending a loan for a home because of someone's:

  • Color
  • National Origin
  • Religion
  • Gender
  • Family Status
  • Disability

The PSA's last scene ends with this slogan, "HUD - One Call. Many Answers" which encourages people to take a call to action and:

to get answers to any questions and find out if they have been victims of lending discrimination.

This isn't the only measure the West Coast-based Pacific News Service is taking to spread the word. Their campaign also includes PSA's announced on the radio and advertisements in newspapers. These illustrate the different types of challenges minority people may run into while attempting to purchase their dream home. The campaign will also include a series of fair lending forums designed to inform:

  • Faith-based organizations
  • Housing Professionals and
  • The General Public

about HUD resources and programs that can help in dealing with unfair practices if and when they do happen.

"The Fair Housing Act makes it unlawful to discriminate in the sale, rental, and financing of a home on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability and familial status."
